After stunning Scottie Scheffler miss, Viktor Hovland claims Travelers Championship in Monday playoff

Hovland Secures Travelers Championship Victory

Viktor Hovland claimed the Travelers Championship in a one-hole playoff on Monday morning, following a missed putt by Scottie Scheffler. The playoff took place on the 442-yard par 4 18th hole, where both golfers landed their iron shots close to the cup. Hovland’s putt dropped, and Scheffler then missed his two-foot putt, leading to Hovland’s victory.

Scheffler commented on his missed putt, stating, “I hit it on my line, I think it was just a little bit firm.” He added that it was a disappointing outcome, noting, “It was one of those putts you kind of had to make, and I just hit it a little bit firm.”

This win marks Hovland’s eighth victory. Hovland expressed his excitement, saying, “It’s unbelievable, especially after Scottie hits it so close there. I knew I had to bring in my best to have a chance to beat him an and he’s certainly brought it out of me and couldn’t be happier.”

Dramatic Final Round and Playoff Setup

Sunday’s final round was interrupted by a rain delay of nearly 90 minutes when the leaders were on the 14th hole. Throughout the round, Hovland and Scheffler exchanged the lead, with Scheffler holding a two-stroke advantage during the delay. Both players had an opportunity to win outright on Sunday with a birdie putt on the 18th.

Hovland missed his birdie attempt, and Scheffler’s putt ran long, requiring him to make a crucial par-saving putt to force the playoff. This left both players tied at -21 for the week, setting the stage for the sudden-death showdown on Monday morning.

Coming into the Travelers Championship, Scheffler had secured one victory this season, along with three runner-up finishes and 13 top-25 finishes in all 13 events he had played. He currently leads the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoff chase and has achieved top-four finishes in two of the season’s three major tournaments to date.

Hovland, meanwhile, had faced challenges since his 2023 Tour Championship-winning year. Ranked 30th in the world before the Travelers week, his best finish this season was a solo third place at the RBC Canadian Open two weeks prior. He had missed the cut at the past two majors and had five top-25 finishes in the 13 events he played before this week.

Hovland reflected on his performance, stating, “I know how good I can get and I keep pushing myself and I keep wanting to get better and then when I fall short it really pisses me off.” He also acknowledged the support from the crowd, adding, “I didn’t get off to a great start on Thursday and I just kind of didn’t let it bother me as much. Obviously it helps when you got people like this cheering you on as well.”

Looking Ahead on the PGA Tour

The Travelers Championship marked the conclusion of the PGA Tour’s eight Signature Events for 2026. The Tour had announced a significant rework of its schedule for next season, aiming to create more events with competitive leaderboards.

Other notable players at the top of the Travelers leaderboard included major winners such as Collin Morikawa at -20, Matt Fitzpatrick at -19, and U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark at -18.

The PGA Tour is now scheduled to head to Illinois for the John Deere Classic. Following that, the tour will proceed to its traditional two-week U.K. journey, which includes the Genesis Scottish Open and the Open Championship, held this year at Royal Birkdale. The defending champion at the Open Championship is Scottie Scheffler.
