Playoff set after weather delays
Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland will compete in a sudden-death playoff on Monday at the Travelers Championship. The final round on Sunday at TPC River Highlands was impacted by storms, leading to a 90-minute stoppage in play. Officials determined there was insufficient daylight to begin the playoff on Sunday evening.
The playoff is scheduled to commence at 9 a.m. on Monday. This marks the first instance of a PGA TOUR event extending an extra day since the PLAYERS Championship last year. Both golfers concluded Sunday’s play tied at 21-under 259.
Scheffler secured his spot in the playoff by making an 8-foot par putt on the 18th hole. He expressed his determination, stating, “It’s more fun when you’re making the ones to win. But to keep yourself in it is also nice. Like I said, I live another day until tomorrow, and will be coming out in the morning and see what I can do.”
Hovland, who started the final round with a one-shot lead over Scheffler, found himself two shots behind when play was halted due to rain and lightning. He later made a 15-foot birdie putt to get within one shot, and Scheffler responded with a 6-foot par putt to maintain his lead.
Key moments from the final round
The final round saw both players navigate challenging conditions and shifts in momentum. Scheffler’s round included three birdies and one bogey, while Hovland experienced a stretch of 10 holes with only two pars.
Hovland initially fell behind by two shots, but a two-shot swing on the seventh hole brought him back into contention. A similar two-shot swing in Scheffler’s favour occurred at the start of the back nine.
Hovland commented on the impact of the delay, saying, “I hit some good shots and then some bad shots and I just couldn’t quite get a flow in. So it was nice to just get completely off the golf course and reset and I felt a lot better coming back. So sometimes that’s all you need.”
Collin Morikawa finished one shot behind the leaders at 20-under 260, closing his round with a 61. He made a shot from a bunker on the 18th to within 10 feet for his ninth birdie of the round. Morikawa, who began the day nine shots off the lead, waited approximately three hours, including the delay, before his departure.
Matt Fitzpatrick finished fourth with a score of 64, followed by Wyndham Clark, who shot a 65 and was three shots back. Clark’s round included a shot into the water for a bogey on the 17th hole.
Scheffler missed a 10-foot birdie opportunity on the 17th hole. On the 18th, he hit a shot from the wet rough to just under 30 feet. Hovland’s 25-foot birdie attempt on the 18th missed by inches, and he tapped in for a 69. Scheffler then made a par putt for a 68, matching Hovland’s total.
The decision to postpone the playoff until Monday was made as officials determined there would not be enough light for even one extra hole.
