San Antonio Spurs, Victor Wembanyama agree to max extension

Report: Spurs, Wembanyama reach $252 million max extension - TSN

The San Antonio Spurs and Victor Wembanyama have reportedly reached an agreement on a five-year maximum rookie-scale contract extension. The deal, valued at $252 million, includes a player option for the fifth season. This agreement follows Wembanyama’s decision to accept the 25% maximum rather than a 30% supermax, which could have escalated the contract to $303 million.

Wembanyama confirmed the extension on social media, stating, “Spurs family, I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes.” This commitment comes after discussions between Wembanyama and the Spurs, who presented various extension frameworks, including the full supermax option. The choice for a lesser amount is seen as a strategic move to provide the organization with greater financial flexibility to build a sustained championship contender around him.

Wembanyama’s Impact and Achievements

The 22-year-old Wembanyama became eligible for this extension following the Spurs’ elimination by the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. His performance during the past season was notable, earning him the 2025-26 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award and leading the league in blocks. He was also named an All-NBA first-teamer and made his second All-Star team appearance, his first as a starter.

Wembanyama is only the sixth player in Spurs franchise history to be an All-Star starter, joining prominent figures like George Gervin, Alvin Robertson, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and Kawhi Leonard. Last season, he played in 64 games, achieving career highs with 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, along with 3.1 assists.

His defensive prowess was evident as he tallied a league-high 3.08 blocks per game and 1.03 steals. This made him the seventh player in league history to average at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks in a single season. Wembanyama recorded 42 games with 10 or more rebounds and 42 double-doubles. He also achieved one triple-double, including the fastest double-double in NBA history on March 30, when he secured 10 points and 10 rebounds in 8:31 against the Chicago Bulls.

Building a Contender

The decision to accept a contract that could potentially save the Spurs approximately $50 million over the next five years highlights a shared vision for the team’s future. This flexibility is crucial as the team looks to develop its young core and manage future contracts for other promising players.

The Spurs’ starting lineup, featuring Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and Julian Champagnie, demonstrated strong performance during the regular season, posting a 21-3 record. This unit finished as the second-best lineup in the NBA, behind Oklahoma City, and is expected to return for the 2026-27 season. The starting unit concluded last season with a plus-18.5 points per 100 possessions.

Wembanyama’s current rookie contract will see him earn approximately $16.8 million this coming season. The newly signed extension will commence in the 2027-28 season with an initial salary of around $43.5 million, with potential increases thereafter. The agreement is considered the richest contract in Spurs history, with a potential $57.5 million option for Wembanyama in the 2031-32 season.

The San Antonio Spurs chairman Peter J. Holt, CEO R.C. Buford, general manager Brian Wright, and coach Mitch Johnson travelled to Paris to meet with Wembanyama and his representatives, underscoring the organization’s commitment to the French player. Wembanyama expressed his reflections on the past season after the Game 5 loss in the NBA Finals, stating, “This has been a hell of a year in terms of experience. I don’t think we could have learned more and gained more experience in one playoff run and in one season, and personally in 18 months. It’s been hard and full of lessons.”
