Edmonton Oilers hire Mike Babcock as head coach

Tychkowski: Edmonton Oilers will be getting Classic Babcock, not Babcock Lite - Edmonton Journal

Babcock’s return to the NHL bench

Mike Babcock has been appointed as the new head coach of the Edmonton Oilers, a decision announced on Tuesday. His return to an NHL bench was influenced by a meeting with key Oilers forwards Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Zach Hyman. Babcock indicated that this meeting was a pivotal factor in his decision, noting a clear alignment in their discussions about achieving championship status.

General Manager Stan Bowman confirmed that the hiring process involved extensive discussions with Babcock, including meetings with CEO and President Jeff Jackson. Bowman expressed being very impressed after their initial meeting. The process also included Babcock meeting with some players and a review by the NHL and NHLPA regarding his past conduct, which ultimately cleared him to return to coaching.

Coaching philosophy and team expectations

Babcock’s approach to coaching appears largely unchanged, characterized by a direct and unapologetic style. He conveyed that the Oilers require a firm hand, and he intends to provide what he perceives as necessary tough love. This includes a commitment to developing a four-line team structure and ensuring that star players like McDavid and Draisaitl engage in a complete, 200-foot game, leading by example in their defensive responsibilities.

The new coach’s tenure marks the sixth coaching change during the Connor McDavid era, which has spanned 11 years. Previous coaches have often noted the team’s over-reliance on McDavid and Draisaitl, leading to a two-line team dynamic and a perceived lack of defensive accountability from top players. Babcock aims to alter this pattern, emphasizing a more balanced team effort.

Addressing past controversies

During his initial press conference, Babcock addressed questions about his past, particularly his departure from the Columbus Blue Jackets three years ago. He acknowledged that there was a lack of cohesion within the team staff, and his wife, Maureen, advised him to leave the situation. He also touched upon criticisms from the 2023 preseason regarding his interactions with players, stating that individuals should reflect on how they might make others uncomfortable.

Babcock indicated that the NHL and NHLPA conducted a full review of the situation in Columbus, and he expressed gratitude for their process. Despite his past record, which includes making it past the first round of the playoffs only once in his last nine seasons with Toronto and Detroit, the Oilers organization appears to view his hiring as a move to instill higher standards and prevent complacency after a sub-par season following back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals appearances.

The organization’s decision reflects a commitment to not taking success for granted and to ensuring that the team meets high expectations, particularly as they aim to convince McDavid to conclude his career in Edmonton. Babcock has a coaching record of 1,301-700-418 with 19 ties over 16 seasons, including stops with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and Toronto Maple Leafs, and led the Detroit Red Wings to a Stanley Cup victory in 2008.
