Blue Jays Roster Changes
The Toronto Blue Jays have made several roster adjustments, including the selection of infielder Sean Keys to the Major League roster. This move was part of a series of changes announced on Saturday. Additionally, outfielder Yohendrick Pinango has been recalled from triple-A Buffalo.
Both Keys and Pinango are expected to be active for Saturday’s game against Texas. These roster moves aim to provide a boost to the team as they navigate the current season.
In a related development, outfielder Jesus Sanchez has been placed on the 10-day injured list. His absence is due to a right ankle sprain. These changes reflect the dynamic nature of a baseball season, where teams often adjust their lineups due to performance or injury.
Player Movements and Performance
Outfielder Davis Schneider was optioned to triple-A Buffalo. This marks the second time this year that Schneider has been sent down. He has recorded three home runs in 118 plate appearances this season. His performance has included a .153/.282/.296 line.
The decision to option Schneider could affect his eligibility for arbitration in the offseason and his path to free agency after 2029. His service time could be impacted depending on the duration of his stay in triple-A.
Sean Keys, a 23-year-old infielder, was a fourth-round pick in the 2024 draft. Following his draft selection, he participated in 22 Single-A games, accumulating 98 plate appearances. During this period, he maintained a .293/.378/.451 slash line, resulting in a 134 wRC+. His strikeout rate was around average at 21.4%, while his walk rate was strong at 13.3%.
In 2025, Keys spent time at the High-A level, where he continued to show strong results. He hit 19 home runs and recorded a 16.3% walk rate. Despite a low .250 batting average on balls in play, he posted a .217/.365/.408 slash line, achieving a 119 wRC+.
He has been even better here in 2025. He started at Double-A and got promoted to Triple-A. Across both levels, he has already hit 21 home runs this year. His strikeout rate stands at 23.1%, and his walk rate is 13.6%. He has a combined .284/.409/.619 line and a 164 wRC+ for the year. Baseball America lists him as the club’s #14 prospect, with his batting skills receiving notable praise.
Impact on the Lineup
The Blue Jays are bringing up Keys to potentially invigorate their Major League lineup, given his impressive offensive results. The team will need to determine how to best integrate him defensively, as he has primarily played first or third base in his professional career.
There have been discussions about Keys potentially getting some corner outfield experience, though this has not yet occurred in an official game setting. The team’s current first baseman is Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Kazuma Okamoto plays third base. George Springer typically serves as the designated hitter.
Guerrero has had a challenging season relative to his past performances, with four home runs and some time missed this month due to back tightness, though he has not been placed on the injured list. Okamoto, despite a high strikeout rate in his first MLB season, leads the team with 18 home runs. He has previously played some left field in Japan, making 26 appearances after the 2019 season.
Springer has not played in the field this year but logged over 400 innings in the outfield last year. Manager John Schneider mentioned earlier this month that the team was considering playing Springer in right field occasionally. Such a move could affect playing time for other outfielders like Nathan Lukes and Jesús Sánchez, who primarily face right-handed pitchers, and Myles Straw and Davis Schneider, who see more time against left-handed pitchers.
The Blue Jays have a collective .249/.311/.391 line and a 96 wRC+ this year. The team holds a 39-42 record. The organization is looking for any advantage to improve their standing in the competitive American League field.

The team’s collective batting performance places them in the bottom third of Major League clubs. The addition of Keys is an effort to enhance their offensive capabilities and potentially improve their overall record.
