Shea’s Transition to Edmonton
Ryan Shea, a defenceman formerly with the Pittsburgh Penguins, has joined the Edmonton Oilers after signing a five-year, $20 million contract in free agency. This move follows his impressive performance during the 2025-26 season with the Penguins, where he achieved career highs. The signing addresses the Oilers’ need for a left-shot defenceman following the trade of Darnell Nurse.
Shea’s decision to join Edmonton came after a period of uncertainty, as he navigated free agency for the first time. He described the situation as stressful, with his agent receiving calls from multiple teams. The defenceman was aware of the Oilers’ strong interest and closely monitored the developments around Darnell Nurse’s trade, which would create salary cap space for Edmonton.
The Oilers ultimately dealt Nurse to San Jose, clearing the necessary room to sign Shea. For Shea, who is 29, this represents a significant career milestone and his largest contract to date. He expressed that Edmonton was his top choice, citing the team’s potential to advance deep into the playoffs.
Performance and Role with the Oilers
During the 2025-26 season, Shea played in 80 games for the Penguins, recording six goals and 29 assists, accumulating 35 points. He also achieved a plus-30 rating. This marks a substantial improvement from his 2024-25 season, where he had two goals and five points in 39 games. His strong performance made him a key part of the Penguins’ blueline.
Shea is expected to contribute significantly to the Oilers’ defensive lineup, particularly on the bottom pairing and the penalty kill. He is recognized as one of the league’s top penalty-killing defenders. His defensive instincts and ability to move pucks are considered his primary strengths. He prides himself on using his stick effectively to break up plays and being physical in key defensive areas like in front of the net and in the corners.
The defenceman’s role will involve taking on some of the minutes previously played by Darnell Nurse. While Shakir Mukhamadullin, another left-shot defenceman, was acquired in the San Jose trade, Shea is tasked with absorbing a portion of Nurse’s ice time. He is currently positioned behind Mattias Ekholm and Jake Walman on the left side of the defence. Shea played the fourth-most minutes for Pittsburgh last season and the second-most penalty-kill ice time among defencemen, indicating he could play in the 17-19 minute range for Edmonton. He and Connor Murphy could form the first defensive pair on the penalty kill.
Looking Ahead
The opportunity to play alongside superstars such as Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in Edmonton could allow Shea to further develop his offensive production from the point. He previously witnessed Draisaitl’s 1,000th point milestone while playing against the Oilers as a member of the Penguins.
Shea’s journey to the NHL involved playing four years at Northeastern University in Boston and three years in the AHL before making his debut at 26. He was originally drafted by Chicago in 2015 but did not sign with them, later signing an entry-level deal with Dallas. After parts of three seasons in their system without NHL action, he became a Group Six unrestricted free agent in 2025 and signed with Pittsburgh.
The Oilers’ general manager, Stan Bowman, had previously drafted Shea during his time with Chicago, and despite the years that passed, Bowman maintained interest in the defenceman. Shea acknowledged that he sought a quicker path to the NHL level at the time. Now, he joins an Oilers roster that he finds immediately eye-catching.
