Early Movers on Day Two
The second round of The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale has seen notable movements on the leaderboard, with several golfers making strong starts. Among those attracting attention are Matt Wallace, Pierceson Coody, and Jackson Suber.
Matt Wallace has been in strong form, recording multiple birdies early in his round. He made a birdie at the 11th, his fifth of the day, which temporarily placed him in a three-way tie for the lead. He also secured back-to-back birdies, including a 20-footer on the sixth hole after a 325-yard drive. Wallace has previously not finished higher than 40th in his six prior Open appearances.
Pierceson Coody, making his debut at The Open, also started his second round well. He birdied his opening two holes, moving him into a tie for the lead. Coody, the grandson of 1971 Masters champion Charles Coody, had a first-round score of 67.
Jackson Suber, who held a surprise lead after the first round, experienced some challenges early in his second round. After making a birdie on the second hole to reach six under par, he later recorded a bogey on the seventh, his second three-putt bogey in a row, causing him to slip from the top of the leaderboard. Suber’s debut round of 65 had previously garnered significant attention.
Key Players and Course Conditions
Other players are also making their presence felt. Cameron Smith, the 2022 champion, made a good start to his round, turning in 31 after birdies at holes 2, 4, 7, and 8, despite a bogey at 6. His performance marks a potential recovery after missing six consecutive major cuts, a streak broken by a top-ten finish at this year’s PGA.
Eric Cole, whose parents were also accomplished golfers, is making a significant move up the leaderboard. After a first-round 76 and a bogey on the third hole this morning, he has since recorded birdies at holes 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, and 12, improving his position by 81 places from the start of play.
The course conditions at Royal Birkdale have been a factor, with efforts made to keep the course playable despite hot and dry weather. Technology, such as the USGA TS3 smart ball, is being used to measure firmness, trueness, and speed of the greens to ensure consistency across all 18 holes.
Notable Tee Times and Challenges
The morning wave of tee times featured prominent players like Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Matt Fitzpatrick, who teed off at 10:09. Later in the day, groups including Jordan Spieth, Tommy Fleetwood, and Jon Rahm are scheduled to play at 15:15.
The cut for the weekend is expected to be around +1, which means several well-known golfers, including Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick (both at +2), and Jordan Spieth (+3), are currently outside the projected cut line. Justin Rose is at +5.
Harry Hall of Cornwall has had an eventful round, including his second eagle of The Open after holing out from 63 yards on the par-four second. Despite two eagles and two birdies, he has also recorded five bogeys and three double bogeys, resulting in a score of five over par after 20 holes.
Darren Clarke, the 2011 champion, made an opening birdie in his round. He holds a record for the most appearances by an Open champion before his first victory, sharing the number with Phil Mickelson.
Sahith Theegala, a 28-year-old Californian, started his round with a bogey but has since found form with birdies at holes 4, 5, and 8, placing him at one under par overall.
