Olympic Stadium modernization plans
Montreal’s Olympic Stadium is set to undergo an interior modernization, as announced by Quebec’s tourism minister. This initiative aims to align the venue with contemporary standards for major event facilities. The plans include renovating the stands and hospitality suites to enhance the spectator experience and improve comfort and user-friendliness in service areas. Additionally, there are proposals for a hotel to be constructed on the site.
The project’s technical development will be managed by Parc Olympique, the entity responsible for the stadium, over the coming months. This interior overhaul is scheduled to coincide with the completion of the stadium’s roof replacement project in 2028.
Community and economic impact
While specific financial details for the interior modernization were not disclosed, Parc Olympique estimates that the project could generate up to $1.5 billion annually in economic benefits. The announcement coincides with Montreal’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of hosting the 1976 Olympics.
The modernization has been met with approval from various tourism and business organizations. Isabelle Dessureault, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal, stated that the project would serve as a catalyst for business development and enhance the international reach of Quebec’s enterprises. Yves Lalumière, president and director general of Tourism Montreal, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that investments in infrastructure attract major events and prevent economic and tourism opportunities from going elsewhere. The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Montreal also expressed its support for the news.
The province has already committed to an $870-million roof replacement for the stadium. The previous roof, installed in 1998, reportedly had approximately 20,000 tears and experienced a partial collapse shortly after its installation. Prior to that, a retractable Kevlar roof from 1987 was also noted for not functioning correctly and suffering damage from high winds.
Impact on professional sports and event hosting
The modernization efforts address previous concerns regarding the stadium’s suitability for hosting large-scale events. Quebec’s tourism minister, Amélie Dionne, highlighted that the province currently lacks another venue with a capacity exceeding 20,000 capable of hosting major international events. The condition of the old roof had limited the stadium to hosting no more than 120 events per year, and for safety reasons, events could not be held during heavy rain or significant snowfall.
The state of the stadium has reportedly led Montreal to miss out on significant events, including performances by artists such as Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, and BTS. According to comments from Caroline Proulx in 2023, the economic benefit associated with Taylor Swift‘s presence in Toronto was estimated at $1,600 per spectator, totaling $350 million that Quebec and its metropolis did not receive due to the lack of a suitable venue for such a show.
The Major League Soccer (MLS) had also pressured the province to address the stadium’s roof issues, with concerns about the future of CF Montréal. MLS commissioner Don Garber previously stressed the importance of a broader renovation, stating that merely fixing the roof without improving the interior would be insufficient for the team’s long-term viability. He emphasized the need for a premium, best-in-class experience within the stadium.
CF Montréal welcomed the renovation announcement, describing it as an important step that demonstrates a commitment to providing sports and entertainment facilities that align with the province’s aspirations. The club stated it would analyze the project details and continue discussions with stakeholders to determine its next steps, maintaining its conviction that a modern stadium is crucial for the growth of professional soccer in Montreal and across Quebec.
The interior renovation project is expected to be completed in 2028, coinciding with the new roof’s installation.
