Rangers Secure Blueliner Braden Schneider

The New York Rangers have reached an agreement with defenseman Braden Schneider, signing him to a one-year contract extension. This deal, announced on Monday, will carry a cap hit of $5.5 million. Schneider, who was a restricted free agent this offseason, will once again become a restricted free agent upon the contract’s expiration.

The agreement helps the Rangers avoid an arbitration hearing, which had been scheduled for July 29. This contract represents a significant raise for the 24-year-old blueliner, who was previously on a two-year bridge deal. Schneider was one of 15 players across the league to file for arbitration ahead of the July 5 deadline.

Schneider’s Performance and Role

During the last season, Schneider played in all 82 games for New York, recording two goals and 16 assists for a total of 18 points. He averaged approximately 20 and a half minutes of ice time per game, marking the heaviest workload of his career. The Prince Albert, Saskatchewan native led the club with 140 blocked shots and ranked third in hits with 163.

A significant portion of his increased ice time came under challenging circumstances. With Adam Fox sidelined for two extended periods, Schneider was elevated to the top defensive pairing for 27 games. In this role, he took on some of the toughest matchups on the roster, a responsibility beyond his previous assignments. While his underlying numbers were affected, the context of these demanding circumstances is important to consider.

Schneider was initially selected by the Rangers in the first round, 19th overall, in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft from the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League (WHL). His first post-draft season in 2020-21 saw him split time between Brandon and the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers‘ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. During his two games with Hartford, he recorded one assist, and with the Wheat Kings, he tallied five goals and 22 assists for 27 points in 22 games.

His first full-time professional season was in 2021-22, divided between Hartford and the Rangers. In 24 AHL games, he registered nine assists. For the Rangers, he contributed two goals and nine assists for 11 points in 43 NHL games. He also added three assists in 20 playoff games during New York‘s run to the Eastern Conference Final.

Looking Ahead for the Rangers Defense

Since the 2022-23 season, Schneider has established himself as a reliable right-shot defenseman for the Rangers. He has consistently played in at least 80 games each season, accumulating between 18 and 21 points annually. His ice time has steadily increased, and he is expected to continue his role as a physical presence on the penalty kill and in defensive situations.

The Rangers have made moves this offseason to strengthen their defensive corps, acquiring Sean Durzi and Marcus Pettersson. These additions are intended to solidify the defensive pairings for the upcoming 2026-27 season. This strategic reinforcement should allow Schneider to return to a third-pair role, which would provide more manageable five-on-five deployment.

At 24 years old, Schneider is still considered to be in the earlier stages of his development as a defenseman. This one-year contract provides both the player and the team with a season to assess future plans.
