Home Run Derby participants announced
The Home Run Derby is set to feature an eight-man field, including two players from the Philadelphia Phillies. Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper will represent the Phillies in the contest. Schwarber, who leads the majors with 32 home runs, was anticipated to participate on his home field. This marks Schwarber’s third appearance in the derby, having previously reached the finals in 2018, where he lost to Harper, and participating in the 2022 derby.
Among the other participants confirmed for the event are Munetaka Murakami of the Chicago White Sox, Willson Contreras from Boston, Jac Caglianone representing Kansas City, Junior Caminero of Tampa Bay, Jordan Walker from St. Louis, and Ben Rice of the New York Yankees. Murakami’s inclusion was noted as a surprise, given he had recently missed over a month due to a strained right hamstring. He was also named an All-Star injury replacement and has 20 home runs this season, making him one of only two Japanese-born players to participate in the derby, alongside Shohei Ohtani in 2021.
The event kicks off MLB All-Star week, offering some of the sport’s prominent sluggers an opportunity to join an exclusive list of past winners. While many players view the derby as a chance to showcase their power and enjoy the experience, the prize money remains a significant draw, particularly for those early in their careers.
Prize money incentives for participants
The Home Run Derby features a substantial prize pool, with the winner slated to receive a considerable sum. The champion of the event will take home $1 million. This amount is notable, as it could exceed the season’s salary for some participants, such as Ben Rice, Jac Caglianone, and Jordan Walker, should they emerge victorious in the 2026 competition.
The runner-up in the derby will also receive a significant payout of $500,000. The remaining six participants in the competition are each guaranteed $150,000 for their involvement. Additionally, there is an extra incentive of $100,000 awarded to the player who hits the longest home run during the event. These financial rewards add an extra layer of competition to what is already a highly anticipated showcase of power hitting.
For many players, the primary motivation for participating in the Home Run Derby is the opportunity to entertain a national audience and demonstrate their slugging abilities. Schwarber, a four-time All-Star, has accumulated 219 home runs since 2022, a total surpassed only by Aaron Judge, who has 227 over the same period. His previous derby appearances include a loss to Albert Pujols in the first round of the 2022 event at Dodger Stadium. Last year, Schwarber secured a win for the NL in the All-Star Game with a “swing-off” tiebreaker, hitting three home runs on three swings at Truist Park in Atlanta.
The event in Philadelphia on Monday night will feature these eight sluggers competing for the title and the associated prize money.
