Patrick Kane has rejoined the Chicago Blackhawks, signing a two-year contract with his original NHL team. The agreement, which includes a full no-movement clause, was announced by the Blackhawks on Thursday. The deal carries an average annual value of $8 million.
Kane, who is 37, spent his initial 15-plus seasons in Chicago, contributing to the Blackhawks’ three Stanley Cup championships. He is among the franchise’s all-time leaders, with 446 goals, 779 assists, and 1,225 points. General manager Kyle Davidson stated that Kane captivated the city of Chicago with his skill, creating memorable moments and helping the franchise achieve success.
Kane’s Impact and Return
Davidson confirmed earlier in the week that the team was interested in bringing Kane back. He noted that Kane has been training at the team’s facilities and is aware of the team’s desire for a reunion. Davidson emphasized the organization’s long-standing relationship with Kane, acknowledging his accomplishments and influence on young players.
The addition of Kane provides another offensive presence for a team that will start the season without Connor Bedard, who underwent surgery on his left shoulder on July 8. It is anticipated that Kane will play alongside Bedard when the 21-year-old centre returns to action. Bedard had previously expressed enthusiasm for the possibility of Kane’s return, stating it would make the team significantly better.
The Blackhawks concluded last season with a 29-39-14 record, an 11-point improvement from the previous season. The team has finished at No. 31 in the NHL for the last three years. Chicago is seeking its first post-season appearance since the expanded playoff format used after the 2020 season.
Career Milestones and Future Prospects
While Kane’s playing style has evolved since his first tenure with the Blackhawks, he recorded 16 goals and 57 points in 67 games with the Detroit Red Wings last season. He has achieved at least 50 points in 18 of his 19 seasons. In January, he surpassed Mike Modano for the most NHL points by a player born in the United States. Kane has accumulated 508 career goals and 1,400 points in 1,369 regular-season games.

His return means he will be joining a significantly different Blackhawks team, with Alex Vlasic, Teuvo Teräväinen, and Arvid Söderblom being the only current Blackhawks who previously played with him in Chicago.
The Blackhawks traded Kane during the 2022-23 season, partly to improve their chances in that year’s draft lottery, which led to drafting Bedard. Sixteen years after selecting Kane with the No. 1 pick, the Blackhawks again chose a player at No. 1 with Bedard. Kane, who will turn 38 in November, has put up solid numbers since leaving Chicago.
