Front Office Departures
The Toronto Maple Leafs have implemented significant changes within their front office, with several influential personnel departing. Among those leaving are assistant general managers Hayley Wickenheiser and Darryl Metcalf. Wickenheiser, who previously oversaw player development, announced her departure via social media, stating that her vision for her role did not align with the leadership group’s new direction. Metcalf, who joined the Leafs in 2014, was a key figure in the club’s analytics department.
Other notable departures include Mark Leach, the director of amateur scouting, and Dave Morrison, a senior advisor of player personnel. Morrison, the longest-tenured member among those relieved of their duties, had been with the Leafs since 2004, serving in various scouting roles. Leach was hired under former General Manager Brad Treliving.
General Manager John Chayka addressed the changes in a team statement, acknowledging the difficult decisions made as part of an ongoing evaluation of the organization. He expressed gratitude for the contributions of the impacted individuals and wished them well for the future.
Further departures from the front office include Danielle Goyette, director of player development, and four members of the research and development department: director of hockey systems Wesley Waldner, analyst Bruce Peter, and developers Andrew Low and Cameron Farquharson. Player development department members Joe Underwood and Michele Moore Davison have also left the organization. Additionally, pro scout Jason Taylor, amateur scout Scott Carter, and college free-agent scout Mike DeAngelis are no longer listed on the team’s website.
Management and Coaching Adjustments
These recent changes follow earlier departures since the hiring of Chayka and Mats Sundin in early May. These included assistant GM Brandon Pridham, assistant GM of player personnel Derek Clancey, and special advisor Shane Doan. Chayka has also made new hires, bringing in Judd Brackett as assistant GM of player evaluation and Freddie Hamilton as chief of staff.
On the coaching front, Craig Berube was fired, leading to a five-week search that concluded with the hiring of Jim Hiller as the new head coach. This week, the Leafs announced the additions of Daniel Alfredsson, John Gruden, and Brad Werenka to Hiller’s coaching staff, while confirming that Mike Van Ryn and Derek Lalonde would not be returning.
A recent development saw Steve Sullivan announced as the new coach of the Toronto Marlies, taking over from John Gruden, who was promoted. Sullivan had previously been promoted to the Leafs coaching staff from the Marlies in December.
Roster Reshaping
Beyond the front office, General Manager John Chayka has also been active in reshaping the team’s roster. Notable player movements include the acquisition of defenceman Darren Raddysh in a sign-and-trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the signing of goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky in free agency. The team also drafted Gavin McKenna.
Chayka has also focused on rebuilding the team’s bottom six in the forward group. These on-ice changes have occurred alongside the significant adjustments to the management and scouting staff.
The changes in the front office and coaching staff underscore a period of transition for the organization following the hiring of Chayka.
