Toronto Blue Jays offense struggles in 3-0 loss to New York Mets

Mets play long ball in 3-0 win over sluggish Blue Jays - CP24

Mets secure victory with long balls

The New York Mets defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 in a recent game, with the Mets’ offense relying on home runs. Francisco Alvarez initiated the scoring with a solo home run in the fifth inning. This was followed by another solo blast from Luis Torrens in the seventh inning. The Mets added an additional run in the ninth inning via a sacrifice fly from Brett Baty.

Nolan McLean, the Mets’ rookie starter, delivered a strong performance, pitching six shutout innings. He allowed five hits, walked two batters, and recorded seven strikeouts. The Mets’ bullpen, including Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver, and closer Devin Williams, maintained the shutout, with Williams securing his 12th save of the season.

The win marked the Mets’ second victory in 11 games and their fourth shutout of the season. They have now won for the second time since Andy Green took over as interim manager. The Mets’ record stands at 36-50, avoiding falling 16 games below .500.

Blue Jays’ offensive woes continue

Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman pitched six innings, striking out seven batters. He allowed one run and five hits, with the only damage being Alvarez’s solo home run. This marked Gausman’s seventh consecutive winless start. Despite Gausman’s improved outing compared to his previous two starts, where he surrendered a total of 13 runs over eight innings, the Blue Jays’ offense could not provide support.

The Blue Jays’ lineup struggled against McLean and the Mets’ relievers, managing only one runner to reach second base, a double by Daulton Varsho in the fourth inning. They recorded just one hit in the final four innings of the game. This shutout loss was the fourth time the Blue Jays have been blanked this season, and their seventh loss in their last eight outings.

The team’s offensive struggles have been a recurring theme, with the Blue Jays averaging approximately 6.5 hits over their past seven games. Manager John Schneider noted the team’s difficulty in stringing together hits and getting key hits with runners in scoring position. The Blue Jays’ record now stands at 40-46, having gone 11-15 in June.

Team changes and upcoming schedule

Prior to the game, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was scratched from the lineup due to back tightness, leading to rookie Sean Keys making his second major league start at first base. Keys, who was called up from Triple-A Buffalo, went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Bo Bichette, a former Blue Jay, made his first appearance as a visitor at Rogers Centre, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. He ended a 0-for-7 stretch with a single in the fourth inning and also made several strong defensive plays at third base.

The Blue Jays have also made a change to their pitching rotation, moving left-hander Patrick Corbin from the starting rotation to the bullpen. Corbin, who was scheduled to start the upcoming Canada Day matinee, had struggled in June, giving up 19 runs in 19 2/3 innings over five starts. Right-hander Braydon Fisher is expected to open a bullpen game on Wednesday, with Spencer Miles likely providing the bulk of the work.

The Blue Jays’ 10-game homestand will conclude with the Canada Day afternoon game. The Mets are scheduled to have right-hander Freddy Peralta start for them in the series finale.
