Canadian Gymnasts Earn Silver
Canada‘s women’s artistic gymnastics team secured a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, achieving a score of 157.300. This marks the second consecutive day that Canada has reached the podium, demonstrating the team’s consistency across all four apparatus.
The silver-medal winning team includes Ellie Black, Gabrielle Black, Lia-Monica Fontaine, Lia Redick, and Alyssa Guerrier-Calixte. Individually, Fontaine performed strongly on vault, while Ellie Black delivered a top routine on the balance beam. Redick showcased a dynamic performance on the floor exercise, and Guerrier-Calixte contributed a significant vault score. Gabrielle Black also made a valuable contribution to the team’s overall performance.
Ellie Black, a women’s all-around finalist, expressed excitement about competing again, noting that this was her first all-around competition since her return and that she has recently resumed training on vault and floor. She qualified first overall in the all-around standings with a score of 53.400, while Fontaine secured her spot in the final in fifth place with 52.050.
Canada‘s strong individual qualifications also saw Fontaine top the vault standings with a score of 13.750. Ellie Black advanced to the uneven bars final in second place with 13.850. Both Ellie Black and Fontaine will also compete in the balance beam final, qualifying fifth and sixth with scores of 12.900 and 12.850, respectively. Redick was named second reserve on uneven bars with a score of 12.650.
Swimming Finals See Canadian Representation
In the pool, Oliver Dawson led the Canadian effort on the second day of the Commonwealth Games. Competing in his first Commonwealth Games, the 18-year-old from Grand Prairie, Alta., finished fourth in the men’s 100-metre breaststroke final with a time of 59.70, missing the podium by .05.
Ella Jansen, from Burlington, Ont., secured a spot in the finals for the second consecutive night. The athlete from Etobicoke Swim Club placed eighth in the women’s 200-metre freestyle test, recording a time of 1:59.18. Paralympian Emma Van Dyk also competed, finishing seventh in the 200M S14 freestyle event with a time of 2:31.24.
Reuben Ward Claims Gymnastics Gold for Scotland
Reuben Ward, a 21-year-old gymnast, became Scotland‘s third gold medallist on day three of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. He was announced as the all-around champion at the Emirates Arena, fulfilling a childhood dream that began twelve years ago when he watched Dan Keatings win gymnastics gold for Scotland in Glasgow.
Ward, whose parents relocated from East Kilbride before his birth, recalled being inspired by Keatings’ success. He described his victory as a “full-circle moment,” highlighting the special significance of achieving it in Glasgow and East Kilbride, which he considers second homes.
Despite finishing seventh after the floor exercise, Ward took the lead following a strong performance on the pommel, his strongest event. He maintained this advantage after the rings. His vault, which had issues in the team event, was successfully executed this time with three twists, placing him at the top of the standings for the final two rotations.
A solid showing in the parallel bars, along with an appeal from Team Scotland that added 0.100 to his score, kept his lead at 0.550. He then secured the gold by maintaining his form on the horizontal bar. His coach, Jake Seager, celebrated as Ward stuck his landing.
Ward reflected on his victory, stating that it exceeded his expectations. He acknowledged the heartbreak of falling short on Friday in the team event, where Scotland finished fourth. Ward is scheduled to compete on the floor and pommel on Monday, where he is considered a medal contender.
His immediate plans involve eating hotel food and resting, with celebrations planned for Tuesday with his team after the competition concludes.
Canada has accumulated four medals in the first two days of the Commonwealth Games, including one gold and one silver.
