Pitching Dominance Secures Shutout
The American League’s victory was largely attributed to a strong pitching performance, with 11 pitchers combining to record 27 outs. They allowed only three hits and two walks throughout the game. The National League batters struck out an All-Star Game record 15 times.
Dylan Cease, the American League starter, contributed significantly to this effort. He recorded a team-high three strikeouts, setting down all three hitters he faced in the first inning. Cease fanned Kyle Schwarber, Juan Soto, and CJ Abrams in the first inning, getting six misses among 15 swings.
Cease became the seventh pitcher in history to strike out three batters in an All-Star Game opening inning. This group includes notable names such as Carl Hubbell (1934), Warren Spahn (1949), Jim Palmer (1977), Dave Stieb (1983), Pedro Martinez (1999), and Brad Penny (2006).
Before his start, Cease considered opening with a changeup but was advised against it by Justin Verlander, the senior AL All-Star. Instead, Cease threw a 96.9 mph four-seamer to Schwarber. AL manager John Schneider, who also manages Cease in Toronto, praised the pitching, noting that the bullpen pitchers fed off the energy and were excited coming off the mound.
The American League’s bullpen continued the dominant performance. Parker Messick, Michael Wacha, Joe Ryan, Nick Martinez, Cade Smith, Drew Rasmussen, Jacob Latz, Louis Varland, Aroldis Chapman, and Bryan Baker completed the shutout. This marks the 10th All-Star shutout and the first since the AL’s 2-0 win in 2013.

Beyond Bellinger’s early heroics, Ben Rice followed with an RBI single in the first inning against Cristopher Sánchez of the Philadelphia Phillies. Miguel Vargas of the Chicago White Sox added to the American League’s lead with an eighth-inning home run off Justin Wrobleski of the Los Angeles Dodgers. This home run was the game’s only extra-base hit.
The National League’s offence was limited to singles by Soto in the fourth inning, Pete Crow-Armstrong in the eighth, and Otto Lopez in the ninth. They were unable to advance a runner past first base throughout the game. Sánchez, who struggled through a 34-pitch first inning, acknowledged that it took him some time to process and enjoy the experience.
The American League has now won 18 of the last 23 All-Star Games, holding an overall advantage of 49-45-2. Some prominent players, including Jacob Misoriowski, Paul Skenes, and Shohei Ohtani, were unavailable for the game. Only six pitches reached 100 mph, the fewest in an All-Star Game since 2021.
During the game, Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero was hit on the outside of his left hand by a 97.6 mph sinker in the third inning and left the game. X-rays were negative. Mike Trout, a 12-time All-Star, went 0 for 3 with a strikeout in his first appearance in the game since 2019.
