The Toronto Blue Jays are preparing to face the Boston Red Sox, aiming to return to the win column after a recent defeat. The team will send right-hander Dylan Cease to the mound for the upcoming game at Fenway Park.
Toronto experienced a frustrating 6-4 loss to Boston on Friday, marking their fifth loss in six games and placing them 10 games under .500. The Blue Jays had initially rallied from an early four-run deficit during the game.
Blue Jays’ offensive efforts and pitching challenges
During Friday’s game, Kazuma Okamoto contributed significantly to Toronto’s comeback with a three-run home run in the seventh inning. This was Okamoto’s 23rd home run of the season, surpassing Shohei Ohtani for the most home runs by a Japanese-born rookie in MLB history.
Despite the offensive push, the Blue Jays faced pitching challenges late in the game. With top relievers unavailable, manager John Schneider brought in rookie CJ Van Eyk with the score tied 4-4. Van Eyk allowed four of the five batters he faced to reach base, resulting in two runs for Boston.
Schneider acknowledged the difficulty for young pitchers in such situations, stating, “I know it’s tough. This is probably the hardest (ballpark) to come in in the eighth or ninth inning when you’re a young pitcher.”
Friday’s four-run performance was only the second time the Blue Jays’ offence has scored four or more runs in a game since the All-Star break. Over their last seven games, Toronto has scored 13 runs.
Cease and Gray set to pitch
Dylan Cease, who holds a 6-5 record with a 2.67 ERA, will start for the Blue Jays. In his previous outing, Cease allowed five runs (three earned) over six innings in a 7-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. He struck out seven batters but surrendered two home runs for the first time since May.
Cease has a 2-2 record with a 5.31 ERA in eight career starts against Boston. However, he has found success at Fenway Park, where he has a 1.25 ERA in four appearances. Earlier this season, on June 16, he pitched five scoreless innings against the Red Sox in a 6-1 victory.
The Red Sox will counter with right-hander Sonny Gray, who has a 12-1 record with a 2.48 ERA. Gray has not recorded a loss since April 14 and has delivered nine consecutive quality starts. In his last game against the Rays on Sunday, he allowed one run over six innings.
Gray’s career record against Toronto is 4-4 with a 2.99 ERA in 16 career appearances, including 15 starts. In his most recent start against the Blue Jays, Gray allowed one run over seven innings, though Boston ultimately lost that game 4-3.
Boston’s lineup proved challenging in the series opener, with Anthony Seigler achieving his first career four-hit game. Ceddanne Rafaela hit a home run, and Romy Gonzalez delivered the go-ahead RBI double in the eighth inning.
In Friday’s game, Seigler led off with a home run and had his first four-hit game in the majors. Gonzalez broke an eighth-inning tie with an RBI double, contributing to Boston’s 6-4 victory. Aroldis Chapman secured his 24th save of the season in the ninth inning.
Patrick Sandoval pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on five hits and striking out three. Garrett Whitlock earned the win in relief, allowing one run on two hits in the eighth inning.
