Regina hosts Argonauts-Roughriders matchup with financial implications for Toronto

3 keys to victory for Toronto, Saskatchewan in Week 4

The Toronto Argonauts are set to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium in a unique matchup that sees Toronto playing a home game in Regina. This game marks the Argonauts’ first victory of the season in Week 3 against the Ottawa REDBLACKS, while Saskatchewan improved to 2-0 after defeating the Calgary Stampeders. The game is scheduled for Friday at 9:00 p.m. ET.

The decision to move the game from Toronto stems from the Argonauts’ home field being utilized for the World Cup. This arrangement means that the Argonauts are expected to receive most of the profits from ticket and concession sales for the game. Roughriders president/CEO Craig Reynolds did not disclose the financial details of the agreement with Toronto, noting that the Argonauts have three such home/away games scheduled this season.

Roughriders’ preparations and financial context

Roughriders defensive back Jaxon Ford described the upcoming game as a “first home-away game,” highlighting the unusual nature of the event. Despite playing at home, the Roughriders will be wearing their road white jerseys, specifically a new “Prairie Blizzard” design. These jerseys, along with other Prairie Blizzard-inspired merchandise, will be available for purchase, with the team retaining profits from these sales. The Roughriders also plan a “jerseys off our back” promotion after the game, giving game-worn jerseys to fans in attendance.

The community-owned Roughriders recently announced a loss of $157,000 on their operations for the previous year, despite generating $44 million in revenue and winning the Grey Cup. The team also allocated $800,000 to their emergency stabilization fund, which now holds $11.3 million. Reports indicate that the Roughriders averaged $1.46 million in gate receipts for each of their 10 regular-season home games and an additional $1.8 million for hosting the West final.

Keys to victory for both teams

For the Toronto Argonauts, managing turnovers will be crucial. Quarterback Chad Kelly has thrown five interceptions in two games, including four against Ottawa. Good decision-making is emphasized, especially against a strong Roughriders offence. The Argonauts’ offence has also been in the red zone 11 times, converting six of those opportunities into touchdowns, and will need to capitalize on every chance against the defending champions.

Defensively, the Argonauts will aim to disrupt Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris, who is known for his throwing ability. Toronto is tied for the league lead with 10 pass knockdowns, and defensive backs DaShaun Amos and Tarvarus McFadden will be key in containing Saskatchewan’s receiving corps.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders’ strategy includes maintaining time of possession, a category in which they lead the league. This approach aims to limit Toronto’s offensive opportunities. With running back AJ Ouellette out due to an ankle injury, Quali Conley, making his Canadian Football League debut, and Thomas Bertrand-Hudon will handle the handoffs. Bertrand-Hudon has 32 yards on eight carries this season.

In the passing game, Harris is expected to utilize receivers Kian Schaffer-Baker, KeeSean Johnson, and Samuel Emilus, who have collectively accumulated 665 yards early in the season. The Roughriders and Argonauts are the two most recent Grey Cup winners, with Saskatchewan currently undefeated in two starts and Toronto holding a 1-1 record.

Roughriders head coach Corey Mace views the game as a home game for his team, despite the financial arrangement. The Argonauts, owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, chose Regina, Winnipeg, and Hamilton for their displaced games, anticipating larger crowds than Toronto’s average attendance of 15,000.

The game will be broadcast on TSN in Canada, CBSSN in the U.S., and CFL+ internationally.
